Two hundred and fifty years ago he taught
at the Newcastle Grammar School, where he ‘did not
have recourse to the strap’ (rare
omission for the time), albeit he was large and fair
and ‘a jovial man, and as lumbering as his book’
(which was an unhurried look
into Histories and Antiquities of the Town
and County of Newcastle). On their way down
Don Coles has published 14 collections of poetry and a novel (Dr. Bloom’s Story, Knopf Canada, 2004). His upcoming collection, A Serious Call, will be published in 2015 by Porcupine’s Quill. He won the Governor General’s Award in 1993 for Forests of the Medieval World (Porcupine’s Quill, 1993).
