…And Five That Slipped Past Us

Despite reviewing some 4,000 pages each issue, we obviously cannot assign every new and worthwhile book with Canadian connections. That often seems like cold comfort, though, and this feature also lets us acknowledge five important titles published last year that we did not cover. Sifting through hundreds of publishers’ catalogues is an inexact process, and sometimes long-anticipated books simply never appear. We must also confess to occasionally not recognizing greatness—or at least widespread appeal. More painful are the promising books that languish unreviewed for want of a suitable writer. Whatever the reason, we could not let the following go totally unmentioned. The many deserving others will doubtless find their admirers without us.
