In his review of Concordia University at 50, Noah Ciubotaru mentions the struggle with Quebec’s proposed French proficiency requirement. In the 1960s, Queen’s University included a course in French as part of the requirement for a bachelor of arts degree (I don’t know if it still does). I recall a faculty meeting in which we were asked to consider the case of an unfortunate lad named Sherry, who had failed his French course four times. Someone proposed that we should defer opening the case of Sherry until just before lunch.

He was granted an exemption.
